From the beautiful misty mornings in Darjeeling to the fascinating walks in the Sunderbans, there are plenty of places to visit near Kolkata during the weekends. Weekend getaways from Kolkata are of various types and is certainly diverse. These weekend destinations are a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of Kolkata.
Let us look at some of the weekend destinations near Kolkata.
They are as follows:

1. Puri
Puri is situated on the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal and one of best places to visit in India. It is around 540 kms from Kolkata. You can spend your weekend amidst the beautiful golden beaches. While on your way to this place, you can also get to see the applique handicraft work at the Pipili village. There are tons of places to visit out here, chilka lake, Chandrabhaga sea beach and many other attractions. Sightseeing is the thing to be done in Puri. Puri has a lot of tourist spots that attract people to spend their weekends out here. The Golden Beach is a go to place for swimming and enjoying it's amazing view, you can also try going to Puri Beach. You can go for a drive on the Puri, Konark Marine Drive, which goes past a lot of isolated beaches. The hospitality is fantastic in Puri and you should try going to this place for a unique weekend trip. All about Sun and sand, that amazes you with it's beauty.

2. Kalimpong
Situated around the Teesta River, it lies about 590 kms from Kolkata. Kalimpong is a major ginger producing region and has several Buddhist monasteries, schools etc. It's a divine view makes it a place to be. It comes under the most well known tourist destinations in India. Spending your weekend here can be ideal.

3. Sunderbans National Park
It is the largest delta in the world and is spread across India and Bangladesh. There are many hotels, resorts and lodges to stay out here for visitors. The hotels and wildlife resort caters to everyone with different economy. A good place to enjoy the wild side of nature and is one of the best holiday destinations in India. Many shoots of Bollywood movies have taken place out here. A place to visit for sure. It is about 100 kms from Kolkata.

4. Kurseong
Kurseong is also known as the little sister of Darjeeling. A beautiful place and is lesser known by people. The interesting part about this hill stations in India is the absence of souvenir shops and the majestic view of it's hills. You can certainly come here during your weekends and enjoy the cold chilly weather. It is about 600 kms from Kolkata.

5. Digha
This place is about 190 kms from Kolkata and it is West Bengal's most popular beach resort. The natural beauty of Digha has attracted a lot of people to come here. The plantation of casuarina along the coast has brightened it's charm. The sea out here is quite shallow for a mile and makes it ideal and safe for swimming. While visiting here during the weekends, it might take you 4 hours to the maximum.

6. Santiniketan
Situated around 200 kms from Kolkata, it is well known for being the peaceful haven for Nobel Laureate and poet, Rabindranath Tagore. It is famous for it's arts and crafts. It is a peaceful town as the name suggests too. There are many hotels out here for tourists. If you're planning to spend a quiet weekend, you should definitely come here.

7. Darjeeling
Darjeeling is very popular for it's tea plantations and exports. It's certainly a dream for any traveler to visit here in their lifetime. The toy trains to the mountains gives you a movie kind of feel. Darjeeling is rich in diversity as well as it's gorgeous view of the Kanchenjunga hills. It has an image of the most visited hill stations in India as well as the most documented as well in the country. It's about 590 kms from Kolkata. The place was awarded as the Summer Capital by the British.

8. Gangtok
The capital of Sikkim is located in the eastern Himalayas. It is the main center for Buddhism. This fascinating hill stations in India are surrounded by lush greenery and has it's own charm. People visiting here can visit the Tsomgo Lake. This lake is encompassed by mountains from all the sides and is also situated at a height of 12,000 feet. It is about 530 kms from Kolkata. Definitely one of the best weekend getaways from Kolkata.

9. Bibhuti Bhushan Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a popular Wildlife weekend destinations. Situated on the shores of the icchamati river, the sanctuary is about just 3 hours from Kolkata. You can get the opportunity to see many birds, snakes and other animals from around the world. The distance between Bibhuti Bhushan sanctuary is 115 kms from Kolkata. It is quite near to the city. Perhaps, it is not well known by people, but it's a great place to see the wildlife with your own eyes.

10. Bakkhali
Bakkhali is a sea resort that is a great weekend getaways. It has a beach that stretched upto around 8 km. When you're here during the weekends, you should certainly try the motorized boat to Jambu Dwip. It is a reserved forest island, interesting place for sightseers. It would take around 40 kms from Frazerganj Fishing Harbor to reach that destination by boat. Other types of attractions of Bakkhali includes the watch tower overlooking the Sundarbans and also the crocodile park. If you're planning to leave the daily stress activity and want some relaxation time to free yourself, Bakkhali is the place to be. It is around 4 hours from Kolkata. The distance between Kolkata and Bakkhali is just about 125 kms.
